Australian Ringneck, Barnardius zonarius, is a parrot that breeds across Australia, apart from the north, east and Tasmania. It is placed in the family Psittaculidae and was described by Shaw in 1805. The bird is found in most parts of the country, avoiding only extreme tropical and highland areas. It is treated as a single species with four recognised subspecies, each with its own range. In Western Australia, it competes with the introduced rainbow lorikeet for nesting sites.
