Australian Wood Duck

Tribonyx mortierii

The Australian Wood Duck, scientifically known as Tribonyx mortierii, is a medium-sized waterfowl species native to Australia. It is recognized by its distinctive combination of colors, with a dark brown head and mottled white and brown body. These ducks are often found in a variety of wetland habitats, including swamps, lakes, and rivers. They are known for their strong pair bonds and can often be seen in pairs or small family groups. Australian Wood Ducks are herbivorous, feeding on a variety of plant matter and occasionally insects. While their populations are currently stable, they face threats from habitat loss and hunting in some areas.
