It is widespread across much of mainland Australia and is especially associated with drier country. The bird favours places near water and areas where rain gathers, including grassland with scattered trees and shrubs, open woodland, and cultivated land such as rice fields. It was described by Gould in 1837. Its range is the most extensive of the Australian estrildids on the mainland.
