Baer's pochard

Aythya baeri

Baer's pochard (Aythya baeri) is a medium-sized diving duck found in East Asia. The male has a striking black head and neck with a white triangular patch at the base of the bill. The female is brown with a darker head and a distinctive white eye-ring. Baer's pochard breeds in freshwater marshes and lakes, and winters in shallow freshwater bodies. It feeds by diving and foraging for aquatic plants, seeds, and invertebrates. This species is threatened by habitat loss, pollution, and hunting, and its population has declined significantly in recent years.
