Band-bellied Owl, Pulsatrix melanota, is an owl of south-eastern Colombia through Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia in South America. It belongs to the family Strigidae and was described by Tschudi in 1844. Its range follows the eastern Andes, where it occurs in humid montane forest and foothill rainforest, as well as along forest margins and in openings with scattered trees. The species is marked by a dark brown facial disk, white brows over reddish brown eyes, dark chocolate upperparts with pale spotting, and underparts that are white to creamy with reddish brown barring.
