Band-tailed Barbthroat

Threnetes ruckeri (Bourcier, 1847)

Trochilidae — Hummingbirds

Band-tailed Barbthroat, Threnetes ruckeri, is a hummingbird of Middle America and South America, breeding from Guatemala to Venezuela and Ecuador. It is a member of the family Trochilidae in the order Apodiformes. The species lives in the understorey and along the edges of primary forest and old second growth, and it also uses semi-open shrubland, thickets and plantations. It is a hermit hummingbird with a nearly straight bill, and the sexes are alike, though the female’s bill is more curved and the plumage shows less contrast. The tail has a dark band near the end, formed by white bases and tips to the feathers.
