Banded Barbet

Gymnobucco peli

The Banded Barbet (Gymnobucco peli) is a medium-sized bird found in the dense forests and woodlands of West Africa. It has a distinctive appearance, with a black head, white throat, and a vibrant mix of red, yellow, and black banding on its body. This species is known for its loud and repetitive call, often heard in the early morning and late afternoon. Banded Barbets feed on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates, and they nest in tree cavities. They play an important role in forest ecosystems as seed dispersers. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the conservation status of the Banded Barbet is currently categorized as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
