Banded Cotinga, Cotinga maculata, breeds in south-east Brazil, where it is confined to tropical moist lowland forest in the Atlantic forest zone. It is mainly found in Bahia, with only occasional records from Minas Gerais, and it may once have occurred in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. The species is tied to the canopy and is notable for its modified primaries, which create a faint whir in display. It is also known from protected areas such as RPPN Estação Veracel and Reserva Serra Bonita.
