Banded Dotterel

Haematopus finschi

The Banded Dotterel, also known as the New Zealand Dotterel, is a small shorebird native to New Zealand. It has a distinctive black and white plumage, with a black band across its chest and a white eyebrow stripe. These birds are often found in coastal areas, estuaries, and sandy beaches, where they forage for insects, small crustaceans, and mollusks. Banded Dotterels are known for their distinctive piping calls and agile running on the sand. They are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and predation by introduced mammals.
