Banded Pitta

Hydrornis cyaneus

The Banded Pitta (Hydrornis cyaneus) is a strikingly colored bird found in the forests of Southeast Asia. It is known for its vibrant plumage, which features a combination of black, blue, and chestnut bands. This medium-sized bird is known for its distinctive call, often heard before it is seen. Banded Pittas forage on the forest floor for insects and small invertebrates, and they are known for their secretive behavior, often remaining hidden within the dense undergrowth. These birds are highly territorial and can be found in lowland and montane forests, where they nest in leaf litter on the forest floor. Despite their striking appearance, Banded Pittas can be challenging to spot due to their elusive nature.
