Banded Woodpecker

Gecinulus grantia

The Banded Woodpecker (Gecinulus grantia) is a striking woodpecker species found in Southeast Asia. It has a distinctive black and white banded pattern on its back and wings, with a red crown on the head of the male. This species is known for its drumming behavior, using its bill to create rhythmic patterns on trees to communicate and establish territories. Banded Woodpeckers primarily feed on insects and larvae found in trees, using their strong bills to excavate wood. They are often found in mature forests and wooded areas, where they can forage and nest in tree cavities. Despite facing habitat loss in some parts of its range, the Banded Woodpecker is currently not considered to be at risk and is categorized as Least Concern by the IUCN.
