Barking Owl

Ninox connivens

The Barking Owl (Ninox connivens) is a medium-sized owl native to Australia and southern New Guinea. It is known for its distinctive 'woof-woof' call, which resembles a dog's bark. This nocturnal bird of prey has a heart-shaped facial disc, mottled brown plumage, and large, dark eyes. Barking Owls primarily feed on small mammals, birds, and insects, using their keen hearing and silent flight to hunt effectively in woodland and open forest habitats. They are often found near water sources and are known for their territorial calls during the breeding season. Despite being adaptable to human-modified landscapes, Barking Owls face threats from habitat loss and urbanization.
