Barking Owl

Ninox variegata

The Barking Owl (Ninox variegata) is a medium-sized owl native to Australia and southern New Guinea. It is known for its distinctive 'woof-woof' call, which gives it its common name. These nocturnal birds are often found in open woodlands, forests, and along watercourses, where they hunt for small mammals, birds, and insects. Barking Owls are characterized by their mottled brown and white plumage, with prominent dark eyes and a hooked beak. They are medium-sized owls, with a wingspan of around 90-110 cm. The conservation status of the Barking Owl is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, due to its relatively stable population and widespread distribution.
