Barolo Shearwater

Puffinus baroli (Bonaparte, 1857)

Barolo Shearwater, Puffinus baroli, breeds on Atlantic islets off the Azores, Madeira, the Salvage Islands and the Canary Islands, and it is rare away from the breeding season along the coasts of south-west Europe and north-west Africa, as well as near the shelf-slope break off New England. It is a shearwater of the Procellariidae. It can be told from similar North Atlantic shearwaters by its pale face set against a dark eye, a silvery panel on the upperwing, shorter rounded wings and blue feet. It was described by Bonaparte in 1857.

Nonbreeding range

rare to coasts of sw Europe and nw Africa, and near shelf-slope break off New England (nw North Atlantic)
