Aegotheles crinifrons
The Barred Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles crinifrons) is a small, nocturnal bird native to the rainforests and woodlands of New Guinea and nearby islands. This species is known for its cryptic plumage, which provides excellent camouflage among the dense foliage where it hunts for insects and small vertebrates at night. With its large eyes and wide gape, the Barred Owlet-nightjar is a skilled predator, using its sharp talons to capture prey. Its distinctive call, a series of soft whistles and churring sounds, can often be heard echoing through the forest. Despite its elusive nature, the Barred Owlet-nightjar plays a vital role in the ecosystem as a predator of insects, contributing to the balance of the forest's food web.
