Bucephala islandica
Barrow's goldeneye is a medium-sized diving duck found in North America and Iceland. The males have striking black-and-white plumage with a purplish-black head and a crescent-shaped white patch in front of the eye. The females are brown with a smaller white patch on the face. These ducks are known for their distinctive whistling calls and are often found in freshwater lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. They feed on aquatic invertebrates and small fish by diving underwater. Barrow's goldeneyes are known for their agility in flight and their ability to dive to considerable depths. While the North American population is relatively stable, the Icelandic population faces threats from habitat loss and disturbance.
