Bates's weaver

Ploceus batesi

Bates's weaver (Ploceus batesi) is a small passerine bird found in the forests and woodlands of West Africa. This species is known for its distinctive yellow and black plumage, with males displaying a bright yellow crown and underparts, while females and non-breeding males have more subdued plumage. Bates's weavers are highly social birds, often seen in large flocks constructing intricate, woven nests in trees. They primarily feed on insects and seeds, foraging in the canopy and undergrowth. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, Bates's weaver populations are declining, and they are currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
