Baudo Guan

Penelope ortoni Salvin, 1874

Cracidae — Chachalacas, Curassows, Guans

Baudo Guan, Penelope ortoni, is a bird of the Cracidae family found in western Colombia and western Ecuador, in the lower Andean foothills and at the foot of the western slopes. It lives in humid forest and is closely tied to that habitat. The head is plain, which separates it from the other guans in the same part of South America, whose heads show pale markings. It was described by Salvin in 1874. In Ecuador it is protected by law, and its range has declined, with hunting and habitat loss affecting much of its former distribution.
