Bearded Guan

Penelope barbata

The Bearded Guan (Penelope barbata) is a medium-sized bird found in the humid forests of South America. It has a distinctive appearance with a black body, white speckled wings, and a prominent red dewlap. This species is known for its loud and repetitive calls, often heard in the early morning or late afternoon. Bearded Guans are primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits, seeds, and occasionally insects. They play an important role in seed dispersal within their forest habitat. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Bearded Guan faces conservation concerns in some parts of its range.
