Bearded Helmetcrest

Oxypogon stuebelii

The Bearded Helmetcrest is a striking hummingbird species found in the cloud forests of the Andes mountains in South America. It is known for its distinctive long, white beard-like feathers that extend from its throat. The male has iridescent green and blue plumage on its head and upperparts, while the female is slightly duller in color. These birds are highly territorial and often defend their feeding areas vigorously. They primarily feed on nectar from a variety of flowers and may also consume small insects. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the Bearded Helmetcrest faces threats to its survival.
