Bearded Screech Owl, Megascops barbarus, is an owl of the family Strigidae that breeds in Middle America, in southern Mexico and northern Guatemala. It lives in humid montane forest in the highlands, including pine-oak, oak and cloud forest. The species was described in 1868 by Philip Sclater and Osbert Salvin. It is resident across its range and is the smallest member of its genus in North America. Two colour forms are known, one grey-brown and one dark reddish, with intermediates also recorded.
