Bearded Woodpecker, Chloropicus namaquus, is a woodpecker found in eastern, south-central and south-eastern Africa. It lives across a broad spread of wooded habitats, from lowland areas to about 3,000 m. A striking feature is its head pattern, with a black moustache, dark eye-stripe and crown set against white on the face, chin and throat. The body is brownish with narrow white barring, and the male has a red hind crown that the female lacks. It is also known for a large greyish-black bill.
