Beautiful Fruit Dove

Ptilinopus pulchellus

The Beautiful Fruit Dove, or Ptilinopus pulchellus, is a small, colorful bird found in the forests and woodlands of New Guinea and nearby islands. This species is known for its striking plumage, with a vibrant green back, purple crown, and bright yellow underparts. The male has a distinctive pink forehead and throat, while the female has a more subdued coloration. Beautiful Fruit Doves primarily feed on fruits and berries, and their soft, flute-like calls can often be heard echoing through the forest canopy. They play an important role in seed dispersal within their habitat, contributing to the diversity of plant life. Despite being relatively common in its range, the Beautiful Fruit Dove faces threats from habitat loss and hunting.
