Bengal Florican

Houbaropsis bengalensis

The Bengal Florican (Houbaropsis bengalensis) is a large, ground-dwelling bird found in the grasslands of South and Southeast Asia. Males are known for their striking black and white plumage with a distinctive bright red throat wattle, while females are more cryptically colored to blend in with their surroundings. These birds are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of grassland invertebrates. The Bengal Florican is facing significant threats due to habitat loss and degradation, primarily from agricultural expansion and intensification. As a result, their populations are declining, and they are classified as Endangered by the IUCN.
