Black-and-rufous Swallow

Hirundo nigrorufa

The Black-and-rufous Swallow is a striking bird found in South America. It has a glossy black plumage with rufous underparts and a deeply forked tail. These agile birds are often seen in flight, darting and swooping to catch insects. They are known for their distinctive aerial acrobatics. Black-and-rufous Swallows are typically found in open areas near water, such as marshes, rivers, and lakes. They build cup-shaped nests from mud and plant material, often under bridges or overhangs. These swallows are social birds and often gather in large flocks during the non-breeding season.
