Black-and-yellow Phainoptila

Phainoptila melanoxantha Salvin, 1877

Black-and-yellow Phainoptila, Phainoptila melanoxantha, is a passerine of the silky-flycatcher family that breeds in Costa Rica and Panama. It was described by Salvin in 1877. It is the only species in its genus and lives in elfin forest and upper montane evergreen forest in subtropical and temperate zones. The bird is a heavy-bodied species with a broad rounded tail. It is found from 1,200 m to 3,000 m, with the two recognised subspecies occupying separate parts of Costa Rica and western Panama, divided by deep river valleys.
