Conopophagidae — Gnateaters

Black-bellied Gnateater, Conopophaga melanogaster, is a bird of south-central Amazonia in Brazil. It lives in two separate parts of the south-central Amazon Basin, one south of the Amazon between the Madeira and lower Tapajós rivers and another between the Xingu and lower Tocantins rivers. It is found in dense growth in terra firme forest, especially where there are vine tangles, second-growth palms and bamboo, and it seems to favour streamcourses. The species is monotypic, and its placement within the gnateater family is not settled.
