Fregetta tropica
The Black-bellied Storm Petrel (Fregetta tropica) is a small seabird found in the southern hemisphere. It has a dark plumage with a distinctive white rump and underwings. These agile birds are known for their graceful flight and can be seen skimming the ocean surface as they forage for small fish and squid. They breed in colonies on remote islands and cliffs, often nesting in burrows or rock crevices. Their haunting calls can be heard echoing across the open ocean at night. Despite their wide distribution, the Black-bellied Storm Petrel faces threats from introduced predators at their breeding sites and is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
