Black-billed Capercaillie

Tetrao urogalloides Middendorff, 1853

Black-billed Capercaillie, Tetrao urogalloides, is a grouse in the family Phasianidae that breeds in the Palearctic in north-east Asia. It occurs in larch taiga across eastern Siberia, with breeding also in parts of northern Mongolia and China. It is a sedentary bird and is closely allied to the western capercaillie. In the far west of its range it has been known to interbreed with that species. It is also more tolerant of open ground than its relative, and usually avoids dense conifer forest. It was described by Middendorff in 1853.
