Black-breasted Buttonquail, Turnix melanogaster, is a buttonquail of eastern Australia, breeding in south-east Queensland. It is a rare bird of rainforest, where it uses the ground layer and thick leaf litter. Its plumage is mainly marbled black, rufous and pale brown, with clear white spotting and streaking, and it has white eyes. The female is larger and more strongly marked than the male, with a black head and neck dotted with fine white marks. In this group, the female takes several mates and leaves incubation to the males.
