Black-breasted Buzzard Hamirostra melanosternon breeds in Australia, where it is found across the mainland except the south, Tasmania, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. It is a large bird of prey in the Accipitridae family, first named by Gould in 1841. Its range covers northern and inland areas, especially places with low rainfall. It is most often seen in wooded country and open forest, particularly along rivers and in tall open woodland. It is notable for cracking eggs with stones, and it also takes eggs and nestlings from nests.
