Daptrius ater

The Black Caracara, also known as the Daptrius ater, is a striking bird of prey found in Central and South America. With a wingspan of around 90-110 cm, this medium-sized raptor is easily recognizable by its predominantly black plumage, contrasting white patches on the wings, and a distinctive red face. It is an opportunistic hunter, feeding on a varied diet that includes small mammals, reptiles, insects, and carrion. The Black Caracara is often found in open savannas, forest edges, and agricultural areas, where it can be observed perched on trees or soaring in search of prey. Despite facing habitat loss and persecution in some areas, the species is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
