Black-cheeked Waxbill

Estrilda nonnula

The Black-cheeked Waxbill (Estrilda nonnula) is a small, strikingly colored finch found in central Africa. It has a distinctive black face mask, bright red bill, and a combination of black, white, and chestnut plumage. These social birds are often found in small flocks and are known for their melodious, twittering calls. They primarily feed on grass seeds and insects. The Black-cheeked Waxbill inhabits open grasslands, savannas, and agricultural areas, often near water sources. Although not currently classified, their population is believed to be stable, but they may face threats from habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade.
