Black-collared Hawk

Busarellus nigricollis

The Black-collared Hawk is a striking raptor found in wetland and riparian habitats of Central and South America. This medium-sized hawk is known for its distinctive black collar and white underparts. Its upperparts are dark brown, and it has a hooked bill and long legs adapted for hunting in shallow water. The Black-collared Hawk is a skilled hunter, preying on fish, amphibians, and small mammals. It builds large stick nests in trees near water and is often observed soaring over its territory. Although not globally threatened, habitat loss and degradation pose localized threats to this species.
