Black Coucal, Centropus grillii, is a cuckoo in the family Cuculidae and breeds widely across Africa. It is found in marshes, savannah, grassland, bracken, undergrowth and open woodland, and sometimes among reeds and papyrus. In some places it stays all year, while in others it moves seasonally. The male tends the nest, while females hold territories and mate with more than one male. The species was described by Hartlaub in 1861.
