Black Crake

Zapornia flavirostra

The Black Crake (Zapornia flavirostra) is a small waterbird found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by its predominantly black plumage, red eyes, and short, straight bill. These birds are often found near freshwater habitats such as marshes, swamps, and wetlands, where they forage for insects, small fish, and aquatic invertebrates. Black Crakes are known for their secretive nature and are often heard before they are seen, emitting a variety of calls including sharp, repetitive notes. They are considered to be of Least Concern by the IUCN, with stable populations and no major threats identified at present.
