Black-crowned Manakin

Xenopipo atronitens

The Black-crowned Manakin is a small passerine bird found in the tropical forests of South America. Males of this species have striking black plumage with a bright red crown, while females have olive-green upperparts and yellowish underparts. They are known for their unique courtship displays, where males gather in leks and perform elaborate dances to attract females. These manakins primarily feed on fruits and insects in the forest understory. They are important seed dispersers and play a role in maintaining the diversity of their forest habitats.
