Black-crowned Night Heron

Phimosus infuscatus

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a medium-sized heron found in wetland habitats across the Americas. It has a distinctive black cap and back, gray wings, and a whitish underbelly. This species is primarily nocturnal, feeding on a variety of aquatic creatures including fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. During the day, it can often be seen resting in trees or shrubs near water. The Black-crowned Night Heron is known for its loud, harsh calls and its secretive nature. It is a solitary bird, except during the breeding season when it forms small colonies. Despite being relatively common, habitat loss and disturbance pose threats to its populations.
