Veniliornis nigriceps
The Black-crowned Woodpecker, scientifically known as Veniliornis nigriceps, is a small to medium-sized woodpecker found in South America. It has a distinctive black crown and white underparts, with a barred black-and-white back and wings. This species is known for its drumming sound, created by rapid pecking on trees to communicate and establish territory. The Black-crowned Woodpecker primarily feeds on insects and larvae found under the bark of trees. It inhabits a variety of forested habitats, including tropical and subtropical forests, and is often found in woodland edges and clearings. Although not currently assessed, its population may be affected by habitat loss and fragmentation.
