Crax alector
The Black Curassow (Crax alector) is a large, ground-dwelling bird found in the tropical forests of South America. It is known for its glossy black plumage, a distinctive curly crest, and a bright yellow knob on its bill. These birds are primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits, seeds, and insects. They are often seen foraging on the forest floor in small groups. The Black Curassow is an important seed disperser, contributing to the regeneration of the forest ecosystem. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the species faces conservation challenges, and its populations are declining in many areas.
