Black Currawong

Black Currawong, Strepera fuliginosa, is a passerine found in Tasmania and the Bass Strait islands of south-eastern Australia. It is a member of the Artamidae family and is one of the currawongs in Strepera. Also called the black jay, it is a large, crow-like bird with yellow irises, a heavy bill, black plumage and white wing patches. The sexes look alike. Three subspecies are recognised, including Strepera fuliginosa colei from King Island. It lives in forest and alpine heathland, is uncommon below 200 m, and roosts and breeds in trees.
