Black-eared Miner

Manorina melanotis

The Black-eared Miner is a small, social honeyeater found in the woodlands and mallee shrublands of southeastern Australia. It has a distinctive black patch behind the eye, contrasting with its pale underparts and olive-green upperparts. These birds are highly social and form large, cooperative breeding groups. They forage for nectar, insects, and lerps in the canopy of eucalypt trees. Habitat loss and fragmentation due to land clearing and grazing are major threats to their populations. The Black-eared Miner is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
