Black-faced Spoonbill

Platalea minor

The Black-faced Spoonbill is a striking wading bird with a distinctive black face and bill shaped like a spoon. This species is found in coastal wetlands and mudflats of East Asia, particularly in China, Korea, and Japan. It is known for its elegant and graceful feeding behavior, using its unique bill to sweep through shallow water and mud to catch small fish and invertebrates. The Black-faced Spoonbill is a migratory species, breeding in coastal marshes and wintering in estuaries and coastal lagoons. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and pollution, conservation efforts have helped increase its population, leading to its current status as a Near Threatened species.
