Capitonidae — New World Barbets

Black-girdled Barbet, Capito dayi, is a bird of the New World barbets in southern Amazonia, with a range in Brazil and a small extension into Bolivia. It was described by Cherrie in 1916 and has usually been treated as a full species. Its name refers to the dark band across the lower breast, where the black flanks reach almost to the centre. It lives in the canopy of evergreen terra firme and várzea forest, and also in nearby mature secondary forest.
