Black-goggled Tanager

Trichothraupis melanops (Vieillot, 1818)

Black-goggled Tanager, Trichothraupis melanops, is a tanager of forest and woodland in eastern Paraguay, southern Brazil, north-eastern Argentina and along the east slope of the Andes from northern Peru to northern Argentina. It is marked by a large black patch around the eyes, which gives the bird its name. The male also shows a yellow crown patch. Its underparts are tawny, while the back and head are dull brownish-olive. The wings and tail are black, and the wings carry a white speculum that is hard to pick out when the bird is perched but stands out in flight.
