Black Guan

Chamaepetes unicolor Salvin, 1867

Black Guan, Chamaepetes unicolor, is a bird of the Cracidae family in Middle America, breeding in Costa Rica and Panama. It was described by Salvin in 1867. Its range runs from northern Costa Rica into western Coclé Province in Panama, where it lives in cloudforest within the Talamancan montane forest zone. It is associated with steep ground in temperate, subtropical and tropical areas, mostly at 1,000 to 2,250 m, though it occurs lower and higher in some places. It is mainly sedentary, with some evidence of seasonal movement in elevation.
