Pheucticus melanocephalus
The Black-headed Grosbeak is a medium-sized songbird found in western North America. Males have striking black heads, bright orange underparts, and black and white wings, while females have brown and white plumage. These birds are known for their melodious and rich warbling songs, often heard in open woodlands, forest edges, and riparian areas. They forage for insects, seeds, and berries in the canopy and understory. During the breeding season, they build cup-shaped nests in trees or shrubs. The Black-headed Grosbeak is a migratory species, wintering in Mexico and Central America. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and nest parasitism, their populations are currently stable.
