Chroicocephalus ridibundus
The Black-headed Gull is a small to medium-sized gull with a distinctive appearance. During the breeding season, adults display a chocolate-brown hood, which contrasts with their white body and wings. Their legs are red and they have a red bill with a black band. Outside of the breeding season, their hood becomes speckled, and their bill and legs turn to a duller red. These gulls are highly adaptable and are often found in a variety of habitats including coastal areas, wetlands, and inland reservoirs. They are opportunistic feeders, consuming a varied diet including fish, insects, and scavenged food. The Black-headed Gull is known for its raucous, distinctive call and its agile flight patterns.
