Black-headed Lapwing

Vanellus tectus (Boddaert, 1783)

Charadriidae — Plovers

Black-headed Lapwing, Vanellus tectus, breeds across inland Sahel and eastern Africa in wet lowland places near water. It is a resident breeder with seasonal movements. A striking feature is the black head broken by a white forehead, lower face and bands across the back of the head and nape, together with a wispy crest. The bill and legs are red, and the tail is white with a black tip. It nests on a scrape in the ground and lays two or three eggs.
