Black Lory

Chalcopsitta atra

The Black Lory, scientifically known as Chalcopsitta atra, is a medium-sized parrot species native to the rainforests of New Guinea and nearby islands. This striking bird is known for its predominantly black plumage, with bright red markings on its wings and a vibrant yellow beak. Black Lories are highly social and often form flocks, displaying strong pair bonds. They are frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits, nectar, and seeds. Their vocalizations are loud and distinctive, often consisting of raucous calls and whistles. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade, the Black Lory faces conservation concerns in the wild.
